"Women are powerful and dangerous"- Audre Lorde
The above quote ties into another quote by Lorde where she explains that her power comes from her intersectionality of being Black and being a woman. Both of those factors provided oppression and that oppression is what made her a stronger person. That kind of power is dangerous because the oppressors do not expect the retaliation that ensues. |
Personal Interviews and Reflections
When asked what the above quote meant to her, interviewee Katesha Broadus a Black female licensed social worker and therapist stated "Women are capable of taking charge in any situation and men should fear that . A lot of times today, women are looked at as being weak, but that is far from the truth." She then goes on to say "I can’t get down with the Feminism or Womanism movement until the race issue is dealt with."
When asked the same question, Jennifer Ellis a White female in-home childcare provider stated "Men are afraid of losing power and losing the good ole boy network that they benefit from." She also states "My husband and I always say that once a race stands up to their own race or a gender to their own gender, that change will happen."

Although the pictured quote is inclusive of all women, we do not see that precedent in today's society when it comes to women's rights. When you look around your workplace or your local women's support group, you see that although women may appear to be making strides in our society, there is still a large group of people being left behind. Women's rights do not always take into account Black women. One obvious observation is the mom's groups. Take a look at your local mom's support group, usually comprised of many stay at home moms or women on maternity leave. There aren't many Black women in these groups because Black women have additional challenges they face that do not allow them this free time.
